Observing the deadlock in negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians, and arguing that this deadlock may lead to a renewal of violence, Anders Persson asks the question: what can the European Union do to help bring about a resolution of the conflict?
The author advises for the EU to:
- a robust process of delegitimization of the occupation of the West Bank and of the Israeli settlements there (which would include a pan-European boycott of products made in the settlements)
- a simultaneous process of legetimization of Israel within the 1967 borders. “In words and deeds, the EU must have an ironclad commitment to Israel within these borders”, which means among others to take tougher steps against groups firing rockets at Israel.
