The drastic and recent change in the brutality of the siege of Homs, the center of the Syrian uprising, suggests that the arrival of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavarov is encouraging Assad to follow a similar strategy to that used by Russia in Chechnya. The electricity and phone lines have been cut and food is disappearing from the grocery store shelves, steps making this siege “Checnyan” in style. Many believe that the Syrian Free Army cannot contend with such a force trained and well equipped, and that if the Arab League wishes to see regime change, they must intervene militarily soon, despite worries that a new front with Iran would open.
