The Assad regime of Syria is stepping up its campaign to stamp out resistance militarily and is now being assisted by the Elite Quds force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. The Quds leadership presence as well as the recent increase of violent attacks by the Assad regime, in which mortars and rockets are being used to target civilian populations, show that Assad is no longer preoccupied with the international community’s opinion or possible intervention. This confidence is due to Russia and China’s refusal to back any anti-Assad move in the UN as well as the possibility of the opening of a new front by Iran in the event of any intervention resembling that which aided the fall of Ghaddafi’s Libya.
