Azerbaijani media has reported that three locals who were arrested last week had been paid and were under the instruction of Iranian intelligence to kill the Israeli Ambassador, as well as a teacher and a rabbi from the Chabad school. The foiled attack may have been an act of revenge by Iran, who has been plagued by a series of explosions and assassinations connected to its controversial nuclear program which are attributed to Western intelligence agencies. It is thought that the would-be assassins were due to receive $150,000 for the hit, and were provided with a sniper rifle, pistols and explosive devices to conduct the attack. In response, Israel has issued a travel warning for Azerbaijan and Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Benny Gantz has warned those who wish to harm Jewish or Israeli interests abroad, saying ”I suggest that no one test our resolve.”
