Hamas member Aziz Dweik, speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) – the Palestinian Parliament – was arrested on Thursday in the West Bank by the Israeli army. He was detained at a checkpoint between Ramallah and Jerusalem while travelling to Hebron.
“The detention of Mr Dweik, which aims to undermine reconciliation efforts (with Fatah) and disrupt legislative work in the West Bank.” was denounced by Hamas member Ahmed Bahar. A spokesman for the Islamist group “condemned the detention and warned of the consequences of any attack on his person”
The Israeli army said that ”Israeli soldiers arrested Dweik at a checkpoint because he is suspected of being involved in the activities of a terrorist group.”
