Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday that Israel’s defense budget will grow by about 6%, or $780 million, in 2012, while he had previously said that the defense budget would be cut in order to finance social reforms. “Given the abundant challenges and threats surrounding us, it would be a mistake, a big mistake even, to cut the defense budget” Netanyahu said, referring to regional instability resulting from the Arab Spring.

Rather than having the boost in the budget, the government of Israel should organize talks with Palestine over the dispute.
